1. How do I view and order textbooks online?
Firstly, you will want to prepare a list of what classes you will be taking. Visit our website at bookstore.wou.edu. Click on “order textbooks.” Select the correct term, and then choose the first class from your list by selecting the correct department and class number. Click “Add Course,” and it will appear in the box to the right hand side. Repeat this step for the rest of your classes until they all appear in the box.
Then, click “Get Course Materials,” and the next webpage will display a list of all of your required and optional materials for your courses. When you have chosen the materials you want to purchase, simply click “add to cart” on each item, then proceed to the checkout by clicking on your shopping cart at the top right. Make sure everything in your cart is correct, and select “continue checkout.” The next page will prompt you to decide whether the bookstore can add items to your order if any of your professors decide to change the textbook requirements for your courses. Proceed by clicking “continue checkout” again.
Next, you will need to register on our website if you are a first-time customer. (Note: Your Student Portal Login information will NOT work for our website.) You will need to click “register here” and complete the registration information for billing and shipping purposes. Once you have registered, you can complete your order. If you select “pick up reservation” as your shipping method, we will prepare your order and hold it in-store for you to pick up, free of shipping charges.
2. I ordered a used copy of a textbook and received an email stating there were no used copies in stock. Why did the website let me order one if there were none in stock?
Unfortunately at this time our website cannot keep a running inventory of which textbooks we actually have in stock. Our website will display every price option that we would provide for each textbook if they were in stock, however because our textbook supply changes every term, the type of book you select to purchase may not be the type we actually have in stock. If you would like to find out which types of a book we truly have in stock, you can feel free to call us and we would be happy to check our inventory before you place an order.
3. Is there a student discount at the Bookstore?
Unfortunately, no. We do offer an Alumni discount of 10% off of your purchase (excluding textbooks and software) with proof of Alumni status. You can receive an Alumni card from the WOU Alumni Association. To contact their office, you can call (503)-838-8449 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
4. Can I use my Financial Aid to purchase books at the Bookstore?
At this time students are unable to purchase books at the bookstore directly with Financial Aid. We require payment at the time of purchase. Unfortunately we do not have the capability to connect charges to a student’s account, so the best course of action would be to receive a check back from your Student Aid after disbursement, deposit the funds into a personal account and then purchase your books with that account.
5. I am looking for a specific book that the Bookstore doesn’t carry. Can I special order it through the Bookstore?
Yes, if we are able to obtain a specialty book for you we will price and order it with no extra charge to you. Visit us in the Customer Service area of the bookstore and we will get to work on special-ordering the trade or textbook you are looking for.
6. Can I return textbooks for a refund?
Yes, dependent on when you try to return them. There are limited windows of time at the beginning of each term that we accept refunds on textbooks. Each textbook purchase comes with a bookmark attached to your receipt that states the specific return dates for the current term. Please refer to the dates on the bookmark to ensure that you are eligible for a refund, because after a certain point each term we do not issue refunds for textbooks. Be sure to bring your receipt and card you used (if it was a credit/debit purchase) for a refund to be issued.
7. How does Buyback work?
During buyback times, students may bring their used textbooks to the bookstore buyback window to receive a percentage of their purchase price back. In order to receive 50% back, the original sales receipt and a photo ID are required. Without a receipt, the percentage received back drops by a margin of how much we are originally offering for the book. This is only possible if the bookstore is buying back that particular book to use for the next term, until the purchase quota is met. It is offered as a “thank you” to those who have purchased books through the WOU Bookstore. If we are not purchasing a book for the bookstore, we also purchase for a used book company, which sets its own prices based on national market values.
8. I am enraged! Why did the Bookstore refuse to buy my book back, or offer me a very low price?!
We can assure you, we are your friends. The bookstore, in reality, makes very little profit from textbooks after purchasing and shipping costs have been calculated. If we are not going to be using a textbook the next term, we would have no reason to purchase it back because it would just be recycled. This is why we have also teamed up with the wholesale company, who might be purchasing books back if the bookstore itself is not. Unfortunately, the used book company does not usually offer a large refund on books, but we try not to send customers away from buyback empty-handed if we can help it. Even if we are not accepting a certain book one term, that same book may be used again another term, so hold on to it and try again the next time we offer buyback and we will hopefully be able to offer you something for it. If you would like to save a trip to the buyback window, we do have a tool on our website (only useable during buyback times) where you can enter the ISBN number of your textbook and it will tell you if we are currently purchasing that particular title.
